It’s not like the world was expecting anything else but hit TV series Game of Thrones’ latest episode has already been downloaded a million times across the planet. Game Of Thrones has become perhaps the most furiously discussed show of its generation.
Yesterday’s episode was seen by a massive 727,000 viewers across the country – a huge 31 per cent jump from season five’s 553,000.
The aftermath of Olly’s actions were aired in the season six opening – The Red Woman – on Sunday night. But, since viewing habits keep evolving, we also need to include HBO Go and HBO Now viewings, which lifts the viewership to 9.7 million. As the Hollywood Reporter points out, these numbers are just preliminary, which means this season premiere of Game of Thrones might be even better once HBO releases the official tally.
Though snapping the debut growth spurt the series based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, that April 24 result is only 0.6% less in viewers than what the then record breaking Season 5 GoT opener had on April 12 past year.
“This marks the most watched series premiere in Australian subscription television history”, a Foxtel spokesman said.
“Silicon Valley” led into “Veep” (0.5, 1.10 million vs. 0.6, 1.05 million last year), which led into “Last Week Tonight” (0.6, 1.34 million).

It may be digital viewership that detracted from Game of Thrones’ traditional ratings. One night earlier, the Beyonce special “Lemonade” averaged 787,000 viewers.
