The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, which aired on BBC Two, dominated nominations in the acting categories.

However, this year Thomas Middleditch, who plays nervy programmer Richard in the HBO show, has deservedly received some attention too in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category, alongside fellow first-time nominee Aziz Ansari.

“Game of Thrones, ” which won a record 12 Emmys last fall including best drama, gets the chance to claim its second top award.

Comedy star Amy Schumer secured four nominations, the most given to any one person this year, for her acting and writing in Saturday Night Live, Inside Amy Schumer and Amy Schumer: Live At The Apollo.

Netflix took a record 54 nominations – 20 more than it received past year – meaning it has overtaken each of the United States networks for Emmy nominations for the first time (NBC 41, ABC 35, CBS 35, Fox 29). Even HBO, which again earned the most bids led by “Game of Thrones”, marked a retreat in what had been its ever-growing dominance: its haul dropped from 126 nods previous year to 94 this time.

But ABC sitcom Black-ish was much less of a lockdown, as evident by the whoops and hollers from its star (and nominations co-host) Anthony Anderson at the nominations ceremony.

Malek and Rhys will be competing with Kevin Spacey for “House of Cards, ” Kyle Chandler for “Bloodline, ” Bob Odenkirk for “Better Call Saul” and Liev Schreiber for “Ray Donovan.”. Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey and Maisie Williams earned supporting actress bids in a year that the show’s female characters gained the upper hand.

Prominent on the Emmy diversity front is the FX miniseries The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, a critically acclaimed docudrama recreating the murder trial of former American football legend O.J. Simpson. On Thursday, July 14, Gooding was nominated for outstanding actor in a limited series or movie for his role.

Five-time best comedy victor “Modern Family” was once again nominated.

Compared to previous year, when Amazon and Netflix topped a small list of online programs recognized by the Television Academy, the category grew in 2016 to include more websites and subscription services, including Crackle (3), amusing or Die (2), Hulu (2), and Vimeo (1).

The TV shows “Mr. Robot“, “House of Cards“, “Homeland“, “Game of Thrones”, “Downton Abbey“, “Better Call Saul“, and “The Americans” are nominated for the best drama series award, while “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”, “Transparent”, “Veep“, “Silicon Valley”, “Modern Family”, “Master of None”, and “Black-ish” are nominated for best comedy series. “I could not be more humbled”, said Harington, as quoted by EW.
