The hit show, based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel series “A Song of Ice and Fire”, was named outstanding drama series at last year’s Emmy Awards. The first-ever short form nominations – honoring YouTube series and the like – are out and include one familiar name: Lou Diamond Phillips, who’s up for actor in a short form comedy or drama. The program featuring Bourdain, who attended Vassar College in the Town of Poughkeepsie and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, received multiple nominations, including one for Outstanding Informational Series or Special. On Thursday, July 14, 2016, Headey was nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for her role.
Benedict Cumberbatch is also up for a best actor in a limited series and as well as two actors in the OJ Simpson show.
Williams seemingly discovered the news after the official Game of Thrones Twitter account tweeted her congratulations.
For Stephen Colbert, it was the inaugural season of his CBS late-night show that was overlooked, while network colleague James Corden earned a best variety talk series bid for his “Late Late Show”. Recognized for three separate projects is Laurie Metcalf for HBO’s dearly departed Getting On and Louis C.K.’s Horace & Pete, as well as for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series (The Big Bang Theory). Sure, John Oliver got a much-deserved nod for Last Week Tonight.
Alums of Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show had a weak showing at this year’s Emmy nominations. You wouldn’t know it from looking at the Emmy nominations list, though. “One of the things I got from Norman Lear and people I look up to is to tell your story and people will find themselves within them”, added Barris. “It’s a good feeling”.
The ceremony will also feature a repeat showdown of last year’s contest in the lead actress in a drama category between Viola Davis (ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder), who won, and Tariji Henson (Fox’s Empire).
Lili Taylor, best actress nominee for ABC’s limited drama series “American Crime”, said in a statement: “I am over the moon to hear about the nomination this morning and to be included in such a great list of nominees this year”.
