“Saturday Night Live” cast member Kate McKinnon won the trophy for best supporting actress in a comedy for, officially, playing various characters.

Subject to unspeakable violence at the hands of their brutal male counterparts, the women of Westeros seemed to come back with a vengeance during the latest season of Game of Thrones.

This year, the winds of change may blow even harder, as Veep and Game of Thrones, barely done with taking their own bows, look certain to struggle to hold onto their newly-minted awards as other shows crowd into an already congested competition.

For this year’s awards, Golden Globe-winning “Mr. Robot”, a conspiracy thriller about a troubled hacker, is vying for the top drama series award and best actor honors for star Rami Malek.

Lead Actress in a Drama Series: Claire Danes, Homeland; Viola Davis, How to Get Away With Murder; Taraji P Henson, Empire; Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black; Keri Russell, The Americans; and Robin Wright, House of Cards.

Transparent is up against last year’s victor Veep for most outstanding comedy series. Blood and guts fantasy epic Game of Thrones is tipped to triumph today as the most successful show ever at the coveted Emmy Awards, television’s equivalent of the Oscars. The comic timing, the rubber-faced expressions evocative of Lucille Ball and her fresh rendition of a modern working mother make her Emmy-worthy. Meanwhile, Dame Maggie Smith is up for best supporting actress in a drama series for her performance in Downton Abbey.

The on-screen president is the undeniable favorite to extend her term to five years on Sunday, while “Veep” itself is the frontrunner to take home best comedy honors after ending a five-year run by “Modern Family” in 2015.

While 2016 has been known as “The Year of Death” for music icons, television lost some significant players too.

Ellie Kemper and her show “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” figure to offer the biggest threats to the political side-splitter in those respective categories.

According to seat placards laid out during the show’s press preview earlier this week, Queen Bey has a spot in the second row.

Aziz Ansari, Anthony Anderson, Kristen Bell, Priyanka Chopra and other stars are scheduled to present awards during the ceremony.

Should win: “Black-ish.” Old-school sitcom excellence meets new-school awareness.

Emmy winners Tony Hale, Jill Soloway and Derek Hough have a prestigious addition to their trophy cases.

Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie: Jesse Plemons, Fargo; Bokeem Woodbine, Fargo; Hugh Laurie, The Night Manager; Sterling K. Brown, People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story; David Schwimmer, People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story; and John Travolta, People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story. He plays a presidential assistant with clueless, neurotic perfection; and, after two wins for the part, has little reason not to expect a third statuette.
