Game of Thrones sweeps Emmy nominations again

The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story dominated the Primetime Emmy nominations along with HBO’s medieval fantasy Game of Thrones.

From favourites like “Game of Thrones”, “Veep” and “House of Cards” to nominations newcomers like “black-ish”, “Master of None”, “The Americans” and “Mr. Robot”, television has never been more impactful in its storytelling, sheer breadth of series and quality of performances by an incredibly diverse array of talented performers. Leading the way with an impressive 23 nods is HBO’s fan favorite – and last year’s victor for Best Drama – Game of Thrones.

The show, which took a record 12 awards past year, faces competition from House Of Cards, Better Call Saul, Downton Abbey, Homeland, Mr Robot and The Americans.

Thursday’s Emmy nominees showcased a more diverse crop of talent in television than in Hollywood’s film industry, which drew sharp criticism this year when all 20 performers nominated for Oscars were white for a second consecutive year.

However, The Good Wife was shut out of Best Show Honours and Netflix’s prison comedy drama Orange Is The New Black failed to pick up any nomination. The acclaimed Bloodline got two acting nominations-Kyle Chandler (lead actor) and Ben Mendelsohn (supporting actor)-just a day after Netflix renewed the family drama for a third season. This is, however, a reduction from the 126 nominations it got previous year. The Best Drama Series nominee scored five in all including Best Writing and a trio of acting bids for Matthew Rhys, Keri Russell and Margo Martindale.

It’s a best limited series nominee in the strong field that includes “Fargo”, “Roots”, “American Crime” and “The Night Manager“, and earned six lead and supporting acting bids for its cast’s portrayal of well-known figures, including Courtney B. Vance as Johnnie Cochran, Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark and Sterling K. Brown as prosecutor Christopher Darden. Since it took so long for a major nomination, it may have to wait a big longer for the eventual win.

“A big surprised was The Americans broke through, got Actor and Actress and Best Drama, so I think that was something fans of that series were really happy to see”.

Kit Harington and Peter Dinklage unsurprisingly nabbed nominations for their roles on Game of Thrones.

A top acting nod for “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays a USA vice president now elevated to the Oval Office, gives her the chance to score her fifth consecutive win and set a record.
