Game of Thrones to end after season eight, says HBO

Stewart has a deal for a new sho won HBO, which instantly makes us all think that he’s getting back into the Daily Show game in time to riff on this insane election year. The long delay will also hurt Thrones next year when it comes time for the Emmy Awards. But all tales must end, and even HBO is bowing to the inevitable.

It’s now 100% official: Game of Thrones will end with Season 8.

As previously announced, the upcoming seventh season will be shortened to seven episodes, and will be delayed from its usual spring berth to instead debut in summer 2017, with the showrunners needing to wait for colder weather in order to accommodate the upcoming storylines (remember, winter is coming).

But what happens after the eighth season?

The fantasy-drama series is an adaptation of author George R.R. Martin’s series of books A Song of Ice and Fire. Bloys admitted that HBO is considering a spinoff, but it is far from confirmed.

“There’s no concrete plans right now”, said Bloys. I’m not sure that the guys could really wrap their heads around it when they’re just about to start production.

Casey Bloys, the U.S. cable network’s new programming president, talked about a conclusion to the fantasy epic on Saturday. However, we’d be equally surprised if Benioff and Weiss returned for the spinoff after devoting over a decade of their lives to bringing Game of Thrones to television. The final season is expected to be broadcast in 2018.
