The bit led to some really amusing jokes – like when Amy Schumer read her napkin note from Mrs. Kimmel aloud only to realize it was intended for Amy Poehler and Cuba Gooding Jr. getting props for his work in Snow Dogs – but the whole thing felt like a blatant rip-off of two previous Oscars jokes: Ellen DeGeneres passing around pizza to the 2014 crowd and Chris Rock selling Girl Scout Cookies to the crowd in March.

It is the fifth time in a row Louis-Dreyfus has won the award for her role in the U.S. version of BBC comedy The Thick Of It. Before that, she honed in on Trump’s Republican presidential campaign.

Ben Mendelsohn of Bloodline and Dame Maggie Smith of Downton Abbey walked away with acting Emmy glory in the supporting categories. It was large-scale and small-scale, from Tatiana Maslany’s win to the fact that Last Week Tonight With John Oliver won best variety talk show, a category that has nearly automatically been won by The Daily Show for years.

“This is so humiliating”, said Damon, ignoring Kimmel’s request to leave. That didn’t happen. Instead The People vs O.J. Simpson took a ton of Emmys and deservedly.

Louie Anderson was honored as best supporting actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of a loving but tough mom in “Baskets”. He also managed to reference a running joke on the show and Good Will Hunting with one flawless parting line: “Tell your mom I like them apples”. The ceremony, hosted by funnyman Jimmy Kimmel, starts roughly at 5:00 pm (0000 GMT Monday). “If Donald Trump gets elected and he builds that wall, the first person we are throwing over it is Mark Burnett”, quipped Kimmel, addressing Burnett, the British producer who created Celebrity Apprentice.

On the red carpet, Judith Light was being fully transparent when she told bleacher fans how hard it is to walk a red carpet in heels. “This is other-izing with a capital O. It’s now official: Game of Thrones has won more Emmys than any primetime TV show ever.

Backstage, the drama’s tight-lipped showrunners were hesitant when asked about the series’ upcoming seasons as the fantasy drama nears its end. While Saturday Night Live still holds the record with 44 wins, it’s a late night program and can’t be counted against the primetime shows. As if that wasn’t enough, Kimmel then joked about the meal’s “juice” boxes – a reference to Simpson’s football nickname – and wondered if Simpson was watching the show from prison and rooting for “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”.

Sarah Paulson, who played former O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark, brought Clark to the Emmys and apologized to her in front of millions for not being kind in the past.
