Game recap: Angels 4, Mariners 2

The 4-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels seemed to have less of importance after Seager’s line drive hit pitcher Matt Shoemaker in the side of the head during the second inning. He said he sent Shoemaker a text message and hopes he’s doing OK. Shoemaker was to be seen by a neurologist, and he will remain in Seattle overnight for observation.

The Angels announced on Twitter that Shoemaker suffered a laceration on the right side of his head, and that he was taken to the hospital for a CT scan. Before his first-inning homer, he was hitting.125 (6 for 48) against Iwakuma.

“The fact of the matter is he was conscious and at least all his reactions were what they were supposed to be on the assessment”, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “All the attention he got and all of those guys did a great job to evaluate him”.

“Mentally it’s not easy”, Iwakuma said through his interpreter, Antony Suzuki.

Deolis Guerra (3-0, 2.76 ERA) picked up the win for the Angels, pitching 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit.

When the ball left Kyle Seager’s bat, he instinctively broke for first base. Robinson Cano, who homered in the sixth, and Nelson Cruz, who hit a solo homer in the eighth, produced Seattle’s only runs.

Holding a towel against his head, Shoemaker and was able to walk off the field with the help of teammates and trainers.

Cruz’s blast was his 35th of the season. He had three good seasons as the Oakland A’s closer, then he was traded to the Boston Red Sox for what would be the first of five straight seasons full of injuries. Who cares about the game?’ When you see the trainers on the field like that, you don’t care about a stupid game at that point.

Saturday: Went 3 for 5, including his fourth triple of the year and a home run, with one RBI and two runs scored in a 10-3 win over the Mariners.

Seager was clearly distraught as soon as he saw the ball hit him.

NOTES: Angels 3B Yunel Escobar (bruised hand) was not in the lineup Sunday. Meyer was acquired along with RHP Ricky Nolasco in the trade that sent LHP Hector Santiago to Minnesota, and he joined the Angels after the September 1 roster expansion.

Two swings was all it took for Los Angeles to put away the Mariners on Sunday afternoon.

Seattle added depth to its overused bullpen by activating RHP Drew Storen and recalling LHP David Rollins on Sunday.
