GameStop now a game publisher, too

The announcement of these new collaborations proves that GameStop might have an in with the video game publishing business, especially with its unusual approach. “We are always thinking about how we can diversify and strengthen our business in areas where we have deep competency, where we can further excite and engage even more gamers, and where we can deliver greater shareholder value”.

GameStop dipped their toe into the game publishing waters a few months ago when they revealed plans to publish Insomniac’s Song of the Deep this Summer.

GameStop has experimented with game publishing before and it appears to be convinced that there’s a place for it in this market.

Video game retailer GameStop has announced that it is expanding into the publishing game, and is bringing with it some big players. Instead, the publisher allows “innovative independent developers” to take the lead, while GameTrust provides a global platform for displaying “creative and fun games”.

More publishing partnerships for GameTrust will be announced at a later date.

GamesStop is widely known for selling games in all formats.

Mark Stanley, GameStop’s vice president of internal development and diversification, says the venture will focus on games “largely ignored by big publishers” in favor of triple-A titles.

The first game to be released as part of this program will be Insomniac’s Song Of The Deep, a Metroid-style side-scrolling adventure about a girl in a submarine. It’s more focused on creating “exclusive real estate” online and in physical retail stores to enable customers to discover indie games that are otherwise easily passed over.
