Sony continued to develop its CD-based console (likely out of spite) which ultimately became the PlayStation it released on December 3, 1994.

So it is brilliant that our pals over at Kotaku United Kingdom have spotted one Reddit user’s photos that are purported to be of a prototype for the hybrid machine.

According to Dan Diebold, he said that he discovered the console in a box of junk that his dad forgot to throw out. If you didn’t know, Nintendo and Sony tried to work together on a console and at the Consumer Electronics Show in 1991, Sony showed off the Nintendo-endorsed SNES-CD with the additional PlayStation brand.

The Play Station remains one of the most elusive and fascinating consoles in the history of gaming.

Of course, it was a turn of events that led Sony to releasing the PSOne, which turned out well for them, so every cloud has a silver lining. Eventually, Nintendo decided not to move ahead with that, much to Sony’s surprise when they announced a partnership with Philips at CES.

Analogueboy claims that he found the retconned console in a box of his father’s old stuff.

Check out the image pasted below and tell us what the future of gaming would have been if Nintendo and Sony would have actually worked out on the scrapped Play Station? Sony’s current PlayStation 4 has sold more than 22 million units since its launch in 2013, while Nintendo’s Wii U is at about 10 million since its 2012 launch (and the company’s slowest selling console yet).

The console, never released to the public, only exists in early prototype form. It’s a well-known bit of game lore within the industry: Nintendo basically created the monster that killed its run at the top of the charts.

Diebold’s father, Terry Diebold, revealed how he formerly worked under Olaf Olafsson – former CEO of Sony’s Entertainment sector.
