The body was discovered at Ardclough Village, which is between Naas and Celbridge, at around 3.30 this morning.

“To be honest I thought it was just someone dumping rubbish”.

Superintendent Gerry Wall said: “From the early evidence and investigation we’re satisfied that this is a recent event”, he said.

“There are always young people taking drugs at night up by the lock”, said an older man who stressed the area was not as quiet as it seemed.

The torso and suitcase had remained in position overnight on Saturday, protected by a blue Garda tent.

A Garda spokesman said: “The investigation is ongoing and further updates will follow”.

It is believed the victim suffered a violent death. The Garda Technical Bureau are at the scene and as you can see the search teams are actively involved behind me. It’s very early, and any avenue of investigation is open.

The deputy state pathologist Dr Michael Curtis is due to carry out an examination at the scene later.

“Gardaí are appealing for anyone who used the canal between last Thursday 14 and Saturday 16 January 2016 in the area between Kearneystown and Ardclough Bridge to contact Leixlip Gara Station on 01 666 7800”.
