Gareth Edwards explains Star Wars: Rogue One’s title

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the most unique Star Wars movie title ever, in part because it is the first one not to include an episode number in the front. This would mean that Hanvey, a life-long Star Wars fan, would likely be unable to witness Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which isn’t released until December.

Hanvey, who was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospice in Hereford, UK, was only given six months to live back in April of this year.

Star Wars icon Mark Hamill backed the campaign by retweeting a message from a staff member at the hospice in England, where Hanvey spent his final days – and now it appears the fan’s dying wish was granted before he passed away earlier this week (beg22Aug16). Here’s a statement from the St. Michael’s Hospice Facebook that went up on Monday.

On their Facebook page, they wrote: “On behalf of Neil Hanvey, his wife Andrea and all his family, we want to thank everyone who supported the #RogueOneWish campaign”. Earlier this week, the publication released new images of Felicity Jones and Diego Luna’s characters alongside driod K-2SO and now the magazine has uncovered the meaning behind the Rogue One title in an interview with director Gareth Edwards.

It’s a testament to the fantastic people at St. Mary’s hospice that this campaign gathered so much steam so quickly, but it also shows that, contrary to popular belief, the world (and the Internet) is actually full of pretty great people.

“On behalf of all our family we would like to thank everyone who has passed on their condolences following Neil’s death last night”, she said in a statement to St Michael’s. We would also like to thank the tens of thousands of people who supported the #RogueOneWish campaign.
