Garmin unveils smart scale, adds heart rate to fitness tracker

It continuously tracks your pulse, showing it on the touchscreen display throughout the day and during workout sessions. Previously, Garmin worked with Mio to provide heart rate technology in its products-which is known to make pretty accurate heart rate monitors-but it appears that more companies are switching to in-house sensors.

Eagle-eyed gadget fans will notice the trend towards companies putting heart rate monitors into their mid-range activity trackers.

Just like the Apple Watch, the Garmin Vivosmart HR will also remind users to stand up if they’ve been sitting down for too long. Talking about the sleep tracking, the Garmin Vivosmart HR introduces the automatic sleep tracking and automatic goals. You can also connect it to a compatible iOS or Android smartphone to receive text messages, calls, email, calendar and social media alerts, and control your music from your wrist.

The band measures activity intensity using Garmin’s Intensity Minutes measure.

Garmin claims that the Vivosmart HR will be water-resistant up to 50m and will last you a good 5 days on a single charge.

“The Index Smart Scale is an exciting addition to the Garmin lineup”, Garmin Vice President of Worldwide Sales Dan Bartel said in a statement. With its ability to store and track measurement for 16 users, the device is ideal for the whole family.

The new smart scale looks more attractive than a scale has any right to be, and ticks off everything you’d come to expect, measuring your weight, water percentage, BMI and body fat.
