Garoppolo injured but Patriots hold on to beat Dolphins

The season opener last week peaked curiosity more than anything else with many wondering how backup quarterback Garoppolo would do in the absence of Tom Brady.

After tearing apart the Dolphins for three touchdowns on his first three offensive series on Sunday, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo went down in the second quarter with an injury to his shoulder. New England won its divisional playoff game at home against Kansas City, but had to go on the road for the AFC championship game, a 20-18 loss to Denver.

Rookie Jacoby Brissett, who was taken in the third round out of North Carolina State, replaced Garoppolo late in the second quarter.

Linebacker Kiko Alonso slammed Garoppolo an instant after he completed a pass downfield and the third year passer had to leave the field in obvious pain.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss reports that head coach Bill Belichick’s plan for the team is to rally around Brissett with Garoppolo reportedly ruled out for the team’s Thursday game against a 2-0 Texans team.

The drive was capped by a LeGarrette Blount nine-yard touchdown run.

Chris Hogan caught 4-of-6 targets for 59 yards in New England’s Week 2 win over the Dolphins.

He had four completions of over 10 yards on the opening drive, capping it with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Danny Amendola.

Ryan Tannehill’s best throw might have been the one he threaded to Jordan Cameron for a TD. Howe said Garoppolo could miss even more time, noting that it may take up to six weeks for Garoppolo’s shoulder to heal fully. Rookie Jacoby Brissett made his National Football League debut and was 0 of 2 – both passes seemed catchable – before a Stephen Gostkowski field ended the first half. After a few early misfires – which could maybe be chalked up to an elevated heartrate – Brissett found 6-foot-7 tight end Martellus Bennett for a 37-yard gain.

-Browns rookie defensive end Carl Nassib sustained a hand injury during the second half of Sunday’s game against the Ravens.

A week after allowing Dak Prescott to throw 45 times, the Cowboys called for a pass 18 times in first half against Washington. The Patriots didn’t bring a fourth quarterback to training camp and didn’t sign a quarterback to their practice squad.
