Garry Marshall: Henry Winkler and more celebrities mourn ‘legend,’ ‘comedy icon’

“Ghostbusters” remake director Paul Feig gave his beloved pal credit for giving his career a kick-start as he said: “RIP Garry Marshall”. His handsome family are so talented and caring In so many ways. Many other celebs have spoken out about the ways they remember him. “He stood by me and for that I am forever grateful for another guardian angel in the heavens above”.

Marshall started out as a joke writer for Jack Paar and Joey Bishop, then came to Hollywood and worked on various shows, including I Love Lucy, Make Room for Daddy and The Dick Van Dyke Show, before creating his own programs.

“It is nice to work with somebody that you could talk shorthand and understand”.

Mumbai: Actor Anupam Kher turned nostalgic after he recalled his meeting with “Pretty Woman” director Garry Marshall, who died at the age of 81.

Tributes from Hollywood were led by actor Henry Winkler-Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli in Happy Days-who tweeted: “Thank you for my professional life”.

“Garry Marshall, I am forever indebted to you”, Sarah Paulson tweeted. “The Odd Couple, ‘ ‘Hospital Mates, ‘ written by Garry Marshall”. Two years later, he created Happy Days, which also spawned three successful spin-offs. He was a world class boss & mentor whose creativity and leadership meant a ton to me. Hathaway’s description of Marshall, the way he worked, and the way he treated others is something to behold, and we could all probably stand to try to be a little more like Garry Marshall.

He added: “I miss Garry already”. He leaves a huge void for all who were lucky to be in his orbit.

He concentrated on directing with his later films, including 1986’s “Nothing in Common”, with Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason; “Overboard” (1987) starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell; “Beaches” (1988) with Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey; “Pretty Woman” (1990) with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere and “Dear God” (1996) with John Denver and George Burns. The trio reunited in 1999 for box office hit “Runaway Bride”.

Bega said funeral services will be private, but a public memorial will be held on Marshall’s birthday, November 13.
