Gartner: Global PC shipments took another dive in Q1 2016, down 9
During the first quarter of 2016, Apple shipped 4.6 million Macs worldwide and held 7.1 percent of the market, up from 4.56 million Mac shipments and 6.4 percent of the market during the first quarter of 2015.

HP saw the worst decline, as its unit sales fell 9 percent; followed by Lenovo, the world’s market leader, whose shipments fell by more than 7 percent.
Worldwide PC shipments totaled 60.6 million units in the first quarter of 2016 (1Q16), a year-on-year decline of 11.5%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. In addition, PCs aren’t being adopted in emerging markets. In the business segment, Gartner analysts said the Windows 10 refresh is expected to start toward the end of 2016. The deterioration of local currencies against the USA dollar continued to play a major role in PC shipment declines.
“Because of the economy issues and other issues it doesn’t look like those people who purchased smartphones are going to buy any other devices any time soon”, said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. In the last four quarters, Lenovo has showed double-digit shipment growth in the US, while the overall market has declined. “There was no particular motivation for USA consumers to purchase PCs in the first quarter of 2016”.
Lenovo remained the top PC OEM worldwide while Dell became the No. 1 PC OEM in the US.
IDC placed Apple over Asus in first quarter 2016 U.S. PC sales. HP sold 3.1 million PCs, according to Gartner, compared to 3.5 million for Dell, which saw modest growth of between 3 to 4 percent. “North America still saw decent uptake, but the vendor faced challenges elsewhere, especially EMEA”.
HP claimed second position, capturing a 19.2 per cent share of the market, up from 19 per cent year-on-year, with shipments declining 10.8 per cent, while in third position Dell claimed a 14.9 per cent market share, up from 13.4 per cent, recording a 2 per cent decline in shipments. “There have been increased sales of two-in-one PCs, but not enough to offset the decline in desktop and traditional notebook sales”.

Microsoft’s new Windows 10 operating system has been slow to jump-start growth of new machines as the company offers free upgrades to existing customers. As you can see in the chart below, Gartner found that Apple and Asus were the only companies among the top vendors that experienced an increase in PC shipments.
