Gary Johnson would add new dimension to presidential debates

Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson, a former governor of New Mexico, bought a full-page advertisement in the September 14 edition of The New York Times calling for his inclusion in debates ahead of the 2016 general election in November.

Green Party candidate Jill Stein generated 1.8 million interactions. “This is one strenuous gig here running for president, and my whole life is health and wellness”, Johnson said.

As it stands now, the presidential debates will include only Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

It marks the first time since 1996 that a third-party candidate has been able to secure ballot access in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In the three that have come out – Fox, CNN and ABC – Johnson registered at 9 percent, 7 percent and 9 percent respectively. Johnson is the only one who accepted – so far.

But to qualify and get on that stage, he says his poll numbers need to be at least 15 percent in five polls. Having experienced fainting spells for the past year that have turned out to be neither meaningful, preventable nor attributable to any particular cause, I’ve learned how confusing such spells can be.

Johnson is airing $900,000 in national radio ads and $500,000 in television ads in 10 mostly Western states where his campaign thinks his message best resonates.

But he departs from GOP orthodoxy in his support of marijuana legalization, abortion rights and immigration reform that emphasizes assimilating immigrants over building a border wall. Therefore, for the good of this great nation, and our future in it, we must oppose allowing third party candidates to debate.
