It was a most unusual afternoon for Wednesday’s Par-3 tournament at Augusta (Georgia) National Golf Club.
Player’s fourth Par-3 hole-in-one, and the 31st of his career, rolled 35 feet down a slope into the cup to established a new career mark for the contest, eclipsing the one he shared with Ben Crenshaw.
Player’s ace was the sixth of the day, breaking the old Par 3 Contest record of five aces in one day.
Putters were given the day off at Augusta on Wednesday thanks to a record nine holes-in-one during the Masters par-three contest.
Player last competed in the Masters in 2009.
History doesn’t bode well for the Texan, but Walker still plans on walking away with a green jacket; he’ll just have to overcome 89 of the best golfers in the world and 55 years of history to do so.
“It might have been the hardest shot I ever had to hit trying to follow them”, Spieth said.
For Aussie Marc Leishman, it was an emotional trip around the par-3 course.
A year ago, Leishman withdrew from the year’s first major after Audrey was hospitalised with a life-threatening bacterial infection, from which she has now recovered.
“He looked good. He looked better than me”. For Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas, there were holes-in-one on the same hole – on consecutive shots. According to Golf Digest, Spieth lamented to ESPN about having to follow the back-to-back hole-in-ones.
