Gas Explosion at JFK High School in The Bronx Injures Three

The New York Times reports that the explosion occurred just after 8 p.m., as the workers were draining gas from a main in the science lab before starting construction.

A fire department spokesman said all three of the injured were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, two with non-life-threatening injuries.

A large explosion was reported at a Bronx high school, injuring several.

A Con Ed spokesman says the utility company had crews headed to the school at 99 Terrace View Ave.to investigate an explosion on the sixth floor.

“Honestly, I thought it was a bomb”, said Jason Osorio, a custodian employed at the Bronx school. Custodial workers in the building described the explosion.

According to OEM, the building suffered damage to its fourth, fifth and sixth floors.

“This was a very troubling evening for residents here in Marble Hill”, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio reportedly said at a news conference Thursday night. The first day of classes for the 2015-2016 school year at the school is set for Sept. 9.
