The fire was contained late Tuesday night, police said, and, while it’s not believed that anyone was in the motel when the explosion occurred, officials will have to go through the rubble to be sure.

The alarm came in just before 8 p.m., and the fire department and two Cascade Gas employees responded.

Bremerton is a town of about 39,000 an hour ferry ride West of Seattle. The blast could be felt for miles, witnesses said.

Officials were letting gas burn off before having the gas company cut into the ground to close the line.

The explosion rained debris over a large area, covering the parking lot and reportedly shattering windows to nearby homes.

Bremerton Police Chief Steve Strachan told The Associated Press there were no reports of anyone trapped inside, and just one possible injury. Hinds said the motel had about 65 guests in 42 occupied rooms, and the blast destroyed about one-quarter of the building.
