The price of WTI oil is trading around $41 a barrel, about $4 lower than what they were when gas prices hit their low point in January.

For now, GasBuddy puts the average cost of gasoline in the D.C. region at $2.28 per gallon, well above the national average but a far cry from the $2.81 per gallon costs Hawaii residents are witnessing this week. The average price of $2.04 per gallon is within fractions of a penny of the multi-year low reached this January, and the national average remains poised to fall below the $2 per gallon benchmark by Christmas. “While some cities and states may see some slight bumps at the pump in the days ahead thanks to the fallout of the downing of a Russian fighter jet last week, we’re more focused on the upcoming OPEC meeting this coming weekend and the potential implications from any major change in oil production”. At the same time, gasoline stations in pricier states are keeping the average above $2 for the time being. “Chances are 2015 will be the busiest year for driving in years due to lower gas prices and a stronger economy”.

In some cases, the price of a gallon of regular is less than $1.50. The current national average for gas is 14 cents lower than last month and 74 cents lower than it was at this time past year.

Several stations in Texas are posting prices of $1.40 to $1.45 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. GasBuddy, a fuel price tracker, reported that in Michigan, Missouri and OH, drivers are paying some of the lowest prices in the country – about $1.80 a gallon.
