“On September 9, a mine inspector in Alabama stumbled upon a large spill from Colonial Pipeline’s large Line 1 pipeline spanning from Texas to New Jersey, the artery and only major source of gasoline deliveries for much of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic”. If the fuel shortages and price spikes reach Connecticut, Curry said the first to experience those effects would be unbranded service stations. Colonial earlier said most of the leaked gasoline is contained in a retention pond near the city of Helena and there’s no public safety concern.

“It may actually cost an individual gas station more to go out and get gasoline to bring to their customers than they can actually charge the customers because of this legislation”, he said. The order also extends one issued last week waiving limits on the number of hours that commercial drivers can be behind the wheel.

“I thought gas may go up, then it may not, but my auto was on empty and I had to get gas anyways”, said Jerome Sherrod, South Georgia resident.

McCrory’s office issued a statement Sunday night saying a pipeline fix in Alabama should soon have normal supplies flowing to North Carolina.

“So, it could become worse at the pump in terms of pricing and availability before it gets better, but there are multiple projects underway to try and mitigate any further harm”, he said, pointing to reports of plans to build a bypass for the leak.

Once the problem with the pipeline is resolved, prices should return to normal, said Molly Espey, an economics professor at Clemson University. “This includes trucking and barging fuel from other markets and refineries”, the company said.

Including the change in gas prices in Grand Rapids during the past week, prices yesterday were 18.3 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 10.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.

“Due to a leak in a critical fuel pipeline in Alabama, which is now undergoing repairs, Georgia and other states have experienced interruptions in motor fuel supply”, Deal said in the press release. He said prices across SC have jumped an average of 14 cents a gallon in the last week.

A pipeline leak in central Alabama is paralyzing areas of six states in the south east. Concerns are now that the shortages could be spreading.

Richard Parks, 32, an electrician in Atlanta, said he saw the price of regular gas jump at a Shell Station in East Atlanta to $2.69 on Monday from $2.51 on Sunday.

NORTH CAROLINA- Gas stations in North Carolina continue to feel the impact of a Colonial pipeline leak.

McCrory’s office says most of those stations are getting new supplies of gas or will get them Monday.

Gov. Nathan Deal’s spokeswoman Jen Ryan said in a statement Sunday that they haven’t received any complaints but will act accordingly if that changes.
