West Indies batsman Chris Gayle is embroiled in another sexism scandal following lewd comments to a female reporter during an interview conducted for the Times.

Gayle, one of the biggest stars in world cricket, boasted about his “very, very big bat” and asked journalist Charlotte Edwardes from British newspaper The Times if she had ever had a threesome.

She also said that the cricketer resorted to objectionable and obscene remarks.

Gayle also answered questions on sex, female equality and homophobia during the interaction.

Gayle was widely condemned at the start of the year for asking the reporter Mel McLaughlin out on a date on live television when playing in Australia’s Big Bash League, saying: “Your eyes are lovely, hopefully we can win this game and then we can have a drink after as well”.

The West Indies batsman said women threw themselves at him in their thousands, explaining he was “damn good-looking”. “Tell me”, wrote Edwardes. Asked if he threw himself at women, he sighed: “Your questions, you suck me dry”. The 36-year-old also said women enjoyed “more than equality” and insisted his countrymen took a relaxed view about sex. “Serious. You ask your husband what he likes and then you make it”, he said. They have more than equality. [But] people can do whatever they want. If I’d been offended, I would have said so in The Times.

“We were disappointed to read the report in The Times”, Lavender told Press Association. Jamaican women are very vocal. You can’t tell someone how to live their life.

Gayle is now in India playing in the Indian Premier League for the Royal Challengers, and he is due to join Somerset later in the year for the Natwest T20 Blast.

Gayle, who is known for his big-hitting in all formats of cricket including a record 17 centuries in T20, later claimed the comments were a joke.

‘I wanted to come and have an interview with you as well, that’s the reason why I’m here, just to see your eyes for the first time.
