Coldplay have paid tribute to the late Gene Wilder by performing a rendition of Pure Imagination. And you can bet the moment that word of Wilder’s passing got out, media outlets looked him up to hear his feelings about the legendary actor’s sudden death. He reminisced about telling Wilder that when he got the money to make The Producers, “you’re going to be Leo Bloom”.
He also noted that Wilder came up for the idea for Young Frankenstein while the pair were working on the 1974 film Blazing Saddles.
Wilder and Brooks consistently worked with each other throughout their careers. The actor starred in several acclaimed movies, including “Young Frankenstein” and “Blazing Saddles”, but his most beloved role was certainly the whimsical lead character of 1971’s “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”.
Brooks recalled numerous famous stories about his relationship with Wilder. “But, when it happens, it’s still tremendous, it’s still a big shock”.
“But then I didn’t want to do the kind of junk that I was seeing”, Wilder said during the interview. “I met him when my late wife Anne Bancroft was doing ‘Mother Courage, ‘ a Bertolt Brecht play, and Gene was in it”, Brooks began.
Brooks told Fallon that later, “I took the script and I said, ‘Gene, we got the money”.
