Geno Smith Injured: Jets QB Breaks Jaw After ‘Sucker Punch’ From Teammate

Although it happened in the locker room, Tuesday’s assault on Jets quarterback Geno Smith by now-former Jets linebacker IK Enemkpali amplifies that point.

Smith required surgery, and Enemkpali, an outside linebacker in his second season, was released by the team shortly after the incident.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) – New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith will be sidelined at least 6-10 weeks after being punched in the jaw by teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali.

“It had nothing to do with football”, coach Todd Bowles said. “He has a broken jaw, fractured jaw, it requires some surgery”. “It’s something very childish that sixth graders could have talked about and it had no reason happening. It was very childish”, coach Todd Bowles told reporters, according to ESPN.com. Richardson could face additional discipline by the league for violation of the personal conduct policy once the legal process plays out.

Indeed, a violent crime (and that’s precisely what Enemkpali committed, regardless of whether he’s prosecuted for it) occurred against Geno Smith. “This is something that happened in the locker room and we’re dealing with it internally and that’s where we are right now”. You don’t walk up to a man and punch him in the face.

This is Smith’s third NFL season.

When asked why he punched Smith, Bowles said that the media would have to ask the players. Smith was reportedly performing well in camp, not throwing an interception until Monday.

Journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick, aka the Amish Rifle, started 12 games last year with the Houston Texans, completing 63.1 percent of his throws for 2,483 yards, 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Jets announced Enemkpali has been released from the team.
