He told a media scrum outside the cafe: ” I like what they’re doing, I think it’s a very important cause. “The idea that we can all participate in everyone’s difficulties is really important”.

Although Clooney is best known for his on screen performances the actor, with a net worth estimated at $180m (£118m), has significant real estate holdings and has a stake in Tequila brand Casamigos.

Courtney (22) said the atmosphere at the cafe was electric as they waited for Gorgeous George to arrive.

Nina Coussins, who works in a city centre shop, said she was desperate to catch a glimpse of the star.

Mr Littlejohn said: “It’s incredibly exciting to be bringing one of the world’s biggest stars to Edinburgh and the team at Social Bite is buzzing ahead of his visit”.

George also attended a special lunch date with Heather McGowan, from Glasgow, who won a charity competition run through itison.com, to raise funds for Scottish social business, Social Bite and George’s charity, Not on Our Watch.

Sonny Murray, a Social Bite worker, said: “Only two years ago I was living on the streets of Edinburgh with a heroin addiction and unable to even afford to eat”.

Littlejohn and business partner Alice Thompson set up Social Bite in 2012 after being inspired by meeting Nobel Peace Prize victor and Microcredit pioneer, Professor Muhammad Yunus, during a trip to Bangladesh.

Social Bite is a not-for-profit deli that donates all proceeds to charities, including those battling homelessness, while the proceeds of the Scottish Business Awards also go to charities, including Clooney’s.
