George Lucas explains why Han Solo didn’t shoot first in Star Wars

Sporting sporadic changes such as the addition of some nascent CGI elements, Lucas famously re-edited the Cantina confrontation in A New Hope between Harrison Ford’s Han Solo and Jabba the Hutt’s debt collector, Greedo. “It’s a mythological reality that we hope our society pays attention to”. In an interview with The Washington Post, Lucas says Han Solo shooting Greedo in cold blood runs counter to what his principles should be. But it’s unlikely to put the matter to bed.

By most accounts, the “Han shot first” camp seem to be a very vocal majority in the controversy.

Ford had been reading the part of Solo in auditions as a help to Lucas during the casting process, but ended up proving himself worthy to play the part in earnest.
