Kimbrough was present for all of Georgia’s practices in the spring and summer following a 2015 season where he started almost every game and made 67 tackles, third most on the team. “It’s just in our best interests”, the elder Kimbrough told the newspaper. “He just was very unhappy”.

Smart said afterward that Kimbrough was on “a little leave of absence”.

Smart said tailback Nick Chubb “has done everything we’ve done” as he continues his comeback from his left knee injury midway through the 2015 season.

Kimbrough’s tweets later indicated he was done.

“I don’t think anything is as frustrating as a coach, because you want to see leaders rise and take over the practice”, said Smart, beginning his first season as Georgia’s coach.

Followed by: “It was a family decision”.

Kimbrough was working behind Reggie Carter and Natrez Patrick at inside linebacker.

The Bulldogs open their 2016 campaign at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on September 3 against the North Carolina Tar Heels. Kimbrough was suspended for last year’s TaxSlayer Bowl, but today’s decision does not appear to have been rooted in any sort of disciplinary or academic issues.
