Deeds, 24, shot Smith, 30, after the officer was answering a “suspicious person” call about 9:30 p.m.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is seeking tips to identify and find the assailant, it said.
Officer Tim Smith encountered the individual in an Eastman neighbourhood, who exited his vehicle and fired his weapon, investigators said.
Officers returned fire and wounded one of the suspects.
Eastman, the county seat of Dodge County, has about 5,500 residents.
Officials say Smith had a conversation with the alleged gunman while standing outside of his patrol vehicle before being shot. Police say the suspect is believed to be armed and unsafe.
Smith had been with the Eastman Police Department since 2011. Smith arrived in the area and encountered an individual. Smith would have turned 31 on Monday, she said. The officer then got out of his patrol auto and was shot. The public is asked to contact the GBI office at (478) 374-6988 with any information regarding his whereabouts.
In Marietta, Officer Davis, a 10-year veteran of the force, was out of surgery Sunday morning and recovering.
