Unemployment in Georgia fell last month to the lowest level in more than seven years, but the Peach State still added jobs at a slower pace than the U.S as a whole and joblessness in Georgia remained above the US average in August. The rate was 6.0 percent in July.

Year over year, the state has added 83,200 jobs, however, a gain of 2 percent. The grant will fund work-based training programs for 30 companies throughout Georgia who are committed to hiring 400 apprentices.

The number of payroll jobs rose by 8,200 jobs to 641,300 in August from 633,100 in the previous month. Those fields losing jobs were government, professional/scientific/technical services, manufacturing and trade/transportation/warehousing.

Another closely watched category – first-time filings for unemployment benefits or assistance – showed solid improvement, falling almost 26 percent from July to August, with 26,335 claims in the latter month.

And, over the year, claims were down by 4,787, or 15.4 percent, from 31,122 filed in August 2014.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates Washington gained 92,200 jobs from August 2014 to August 2015, on a not seasonally adjusted basis, with 84,800 new jobs in the private sector and 7,400 new jobs in the public sector.

Jobless rates for metro areas, cities and counties are due next week.
