German Chancellor Angela Merkel named Times Person of the Year 2015
Despite some of her controversial decisions, she has taken charge when other leaders have stepped back, and Germany’s flourishing economy, prosperity and openness is what she is being recognized for today. Until now three other women who received the title of Times Person of the Year since 1927 were Wallis Simpson (1936), Queen Elizabeth II (1952) and Corazon Aquino (1986).

Although all deserving of commendation, Angela’s presence in politics has meant a great deal to many women and morevoer, her supporters unanimously agree that she has helped keep peace in a particularly unsettled year.
After 29 years of recognizing men, it was a breath of fresh air when 61-year-old German chancellor Angela Merkel was named Person of the Year by Time.
During the big reveal on NBC, TIME Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs said that Trump disqualified himself “many times” throughout the year and that he has a whole new year to let the voters decide if he should get the honor in 2016.
Not by U.S. presidential aspirant Donald Trump, that is.
“She has steered Europe through serial debt crises”.
Although Donald Trump was one of the finalists to become Person of the Year. They picked person who is ruining Germany.’ Quite a mature move.
“I’m sure the chancellor will regard this as an encouragement for her political work, for a good future for Germany as well as for Europe”, Ms Seibert said.
Runners-up on the list include ISIS’s Bakr al-Baghdadi (2nd), the Black Lives Matter Protest Movement (4th), president of Iran Hassan Rouhani (5th), Uber’s CEO Travis Kalanick (6th), and Caitlyn Jenner (7th).

Modi was a contender for the honour last year also and while he was not chosen the Person of the Year by Time editors, he was named victor of the readers’ poll, securing more than 16 per cent of the nearly five million votes cast.
