German police are searching for evidence after a doctor making an emergency house call found the bodies of several babies.

Police said they had not yet been able to question the previous resident of the apartment in the town of Wallenfels, believed to be a 45-year-old woman.

Local media said at least two babies were dead but the respected Sueddeutsche newspaper in Munich said prosecutors leaked that it is seven dead children who were being dealt with.

The bodies are being examined by forensic experts, but the examinations “will take a few time in view of their poor condition, in a few cases” and results should not be expected before the beginning of next week, it added.

Police said she and her husband had three children aged between 12 and 13.

Investigators first revealed the grisly find late on Thursday, after being alerted by a woman.

It is unclear how long the bodies were in the house or how they died.
