Though Mark Sampson already knew what answer he’d get, England’s coach felt obligated to ask defender Laura Bassett whether she was emotionally ready for one more game at the Women’s World Cup.
England take on Germany in the Women’s World Cup third-place play-off on Saturday evening, as they look to bounce back from their agonising semi-final defeat to Japan. Japan then prevailed 3-1 on penalty kicks. Captain Steph Houghton went down inside the box, possibly after her heel was clipped by Yuki Ogimi, and New Zealand referee Anna-Marie Keighley immediately pointed to the spot and Williams cooly converted. A successful English penalty against the Germans to win a match?
Olivia first picked up England’s flag and then dropped it, before picking it up again and dropping it once more.
Can England bounce back from its devastating semifinal defeat to pull off an upset of the ex- World Cup favorites? “We feel like we have a good preparation, and in our preparation we have confidence and are just excited to get this things started”.
The two-time champion Germans were coming off a 2-0 loss to the United States on Tuesday.
Hamm was part of the US Olympic team that won the gold medal in 1996 and 2004, and she was on the Women’s World Cup winning teams in 1991 and 1999. “Poor, poor Laura Bassett”, tweeted ex- England striker Gary Lineker, a member of the 1990 team that lost to Germany on penalties.
It is expected to rally around the stadium 50 thousand spectators, majority supporters of the USA team in light of the ease of movement to Canada.
Yet from the opening whistle in Edmonton, both England and Germany tried to play the sort of cagey, mistake-free soccer – with plenty of hard tackles flying in on both sides – normally reserved for championship contests.
Bassett has thanked her team-mates for their support after her stoppage-time own goal against Japan ended dreams of lifting the trophy. With no time left to mount an attack it was a heartbreaking end to the Lionesses brilliant run, making it a game shy from the final.
The Germans had the majority of the better scoring chances through the first 65 minutes.
Nahomi Kawasumi drove up the right side and sent a cross into the middle for Yuki Ogimi. The ball struck the crossbar and bounced in just before goalkeeper Karen Bardsley could get across. Only Australia, in the first half of the group-stage opener, has managed to score against the Americans. A minute later, Ellen White was set up in the middle, and got a shot off that Kaihori punched away.

Jill Scott, for one, spurned a glorious chance, as she attempted to trick Angerer and her defence and was tackled after being played through by a delicious Eniola Aluko through ball.
