Tah, 20, made his global debut in March’s friendly defeat to England and has been summoned to join Joachim Low’s squad at their training base in Evian.

“We wanted a situation where we’re replacing like for like, a central defender who can play in this position”, said Loew, who paid tribute to Tah’s professionalism for deciding to train while on vacation to stay fit.

Low announced the squad change at a press conference streamed live on the German Football Association’s video feed DFB-TV. Apparently, Low has not specified who he will be replacing the injured Rudiger with.

Tah missed Leverkusen’s last few games of the campaign because of food poisoning but with Mats Hummels struggling with a calf injury and unlikely to feature in any of the group games, he may well start against the Ukrainians.

His withdrawal leaves Germany with Shkodran Mustafi, Jonas Hector, Benedikt Howedes, Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Joshua Kimmich as defensive options in the squad.

Bastian Schweinsteiger made the cut despite suffering a knee injury that sidelined him since March.

‘In preparation for the game against Ukraine it is important that we gain the necessary freshness’.
