Meanwhile, Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger are doubtful to participate in Germany’s semi-final meeting after the pair also sustained injuries against Italy.

Germany’s UEFA Euro 2016 bid took a major hit on Sunday, as star forward Mario Gomez was ruled out for the rest of the tournament with a hamstring injury.

“It’s very bitter when important players are ruled out in the decisive phase of a tournament”, said Germany’s coach Joachim Loew.

“Mario Gomez also had muscular problems, but I think he came off early enough”.

Should Loew’s options be further depleted by injury, Borussia Dortmund’s 20-year-old midfielder Julian Weigl is a promising talent for the future, but a risk at this level. “He has produced strong performances in the Euros and helped the team a lot, not only with his goals”, added Low.

Mats Hummels will definitely miss the last-four clash due to suspension after picking up a second yellow card of the tournament against Italy.

“This means we will have to face a new situation and find solutions”.

Schweinsteiger has been diagnosed with a ligament strain in his right knee.
