Gervais, returning for the fourth time as host and for the first time in three years, delivered some of his most scathing jokes yet, poking fun at everyone from Caitlyn Jenner to Jennifer Lawrence and Matt Damon. “Not even Sean Penn will find me”, referring to recent reports that the actor interviewed escaped Mexican drug kingpin, El Chapo, before his recapture.

Other films vying for top honors include the lesbian romance “Carol” starring Cate Blanchett, epic survival thriller “The Revenant” with Leonardo DiCaprio, the harrowing kidnap tale “Room”, and the summer blockbuster “Mad Max: Fury Road”. Though Inarritu had a similar run at the Academy Awards last year with the best-picture winning “Birdman”, he won only a share of best screenplay at last year’s Globes.

“I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had”, Stallone said. “I haven’t had a moment for it to all sink in yet”.

Gervais’ question, which was censored for television viewers, was reportedly overheard by Los Angeles Times reporter Amy Kaufman who was front and centre during the awards show.

“There is a feeling that it’s his year”, said Tom O’Neil, founder of awards tracker GoldDerby.com.

An emotional Lady Gaga has taken to the stage to thank the cast and crew after winning the Golden Globe for best actress in a TV movie or mini-series.
