The suspect – whose identity has not been released by the authorities – was arrested on Sunday afternoon for brandishing a loaded pistol at the Assemblies of God Church, where Mahama and his family frequently attend Sunday services.
“He was escorted out by security personnel and following a search, the weapon was found”, communications minister, Omane Boamah said.
He said he felt cheated by the President Mahama following the death of Prof Atta Mills since he believed he (Antwi) was supposed to be the next president of Ghana.
A church member who confirmed the story to tv3network.com said “the man acted strangely and was too jittery during the morning sermon”. He did not reveal the name of the military official.
Charles Antwi added that he had acquired the gun from a Burkina Faso national at Nkoranza in the Brong Ahafo Region.
An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday sentenced Charles Antwi, the man who took a double barrel gun to the Ring Road Assemblies of God Church where President John Dramani Mahama worships, to 10 years imprisonment.
