It looks like DreamWorks has added another piece to their “Ghost in the Shell” puzzle. The original series spawned a number of anime movies such as Ghost In The Shell (1996), Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004), Ghost in the Shell: Individual Eleven (2005), Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society (2006) and Ghost in the Shell 2.0.
There has been quite a fair amount of controversy surrounding the planned live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, mainly due to the fact that Scarlett Johansson has been cast in the lead role for the movie. According to the folks at Variety, the motion pictures company has cast Pilou Asbæk as Batou, the mightiest male warrior in section nine and the second in command to Scarlett Johansson’s character, Motoko Kusanagi.
Asbæk is not exactly a household name in the US, but he seems to be on the verge of a breakout. He previously appeared on Showtime’s The Borgias and the hit Danish political drama Borgen.

Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) is directing from a script by Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton), based on the manga created by Masamune Shirow. While pretty enough, the film as a whole rang kind of hollow. In terms of producing, Avi Arad and Steven Paul will assume those duties on behalf of Paramount, while Michael Costigan, Jeffrey Silver, Tetsu Fujimura, Mitsuhisa Ishikawa are executive producing.
