Ghostbusters can’t scare off Pets in cinemas
“The Secret Life of Pets”, starring the voices of Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Lake Bell, opened July 4th weekend to $104.3 million total.

Not great, mind you, not killer, not enough to quiet the weeping manbabies or anything, but it did fine; current estimates give Feig and company a $46 million opening, coming in second for the weekend to the second week of The Secret Life of Pets. There was talk of Joe and Anthony Russo working on another Ghostbusters movie with Channing Tatum attached to produce and possibly star in the film.
One of the reasons why Ghostbusters probably wasn’t able to pull in more dollars – y’know, besides the hordes of people irrationally hating it before they’ve even seen it – is because of two groups of animated animals.
Amid the good showing that the movie exhibited during its opening weekend, CNN reported that it was not successful in dethroning “The Secret Life of Pets” for holding the top spot in the box office. Any guesses as to who came out on top.
The controversial Ghostbusters reboot summoned US$46 million, a solid debut considering the social media backlash the film weathered prior to its release.
After five weeks, Disney/Pixar’s ‘Finding Dory’ has seized the record as the (domestic) highest-grossing animated release of all time. “I think certainly there were hurdles that we had to push through, and there was definitely challenges in regards to the naysayers of it all, but we always knew we were bringing it”. Greenstein said Sony will submit the film for release ‘and we’ll see if we get accepted or not’.
Finding Dory fell to fourth place with $11 million in its fifth week of release, bringing its current gross to $115 million, and in fifth was Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates with $7.5 million.
The Legend of Tarzan came in third in its third week with $11.1 million, nudging its cumulative to more than $100 million. The top 12 grossed an estimated $154.1 million, down 26% from last weekend and 16% from the same frame in 2015.
