The Ghostbusters remake, which stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, received a rough reception when plans for the movie were first announced, and an early promo for the film became the most disliked trailer in YouTube history. Sony called the result “a triumph”. Audiences, which broke down 46 percent male and 54 percent female, gave it a solid B-plus CinemaScore.

Yet given its hefty price tag – the film cost $144 million to make, after rebates – it’s a relatively tepid start for “Ghostbusters” that will put pressure on the film to perform well overseas. The movie still hasn’t opened in key worldwide territories such as France (July 27), Germany (July 28) and China (August 2) yet. Also opening in limited release is Lionsgate’s Cafe Society, the latest from Woody Allen, which opened big with $355,000 from five theaters for a whopping $71,000 per-screen average. Greenlit by the since-departed Amy Pascal, the film is meant to kick off several future “Ghostbusters” installments. The supporting cast is rounded out by Andy Garcia as the mayor of New York City, Michael K. Williams as Hawkins, Matt Walsh as Rourke, Pat Kiernan as a news anchor and Neil Casey as the human villain Rowan, along with cameos from original Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts and Ernie Hudson. But the film found plenty of detractors, including even Donald Trump.

Ghostbusters earned a 73% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with The Infiltrator scoring a 65% “Fresh” rating on the site. Did you go to see the movie? “The Secret Life of Pets”, $50.6 million ($4.4 million international). 2.
