Giancarlo Stanton lands on the DL with a groin injury

Stanton’s injury came from the Marlins’ 7-8 loss to the White Sox, after sliding awkwardly into second base in his attempt to turn a single into a double. He stumbled and fell approaching second base, was slow to rise and limped off the field. Diagnosed with a strained groin upon being forced to the sideline, he initially sustained the setback on Saturday against the Chicago White Sox. And from Tom Koehler, who proved a worthy stand-in for Jose Fernandez in what was to have been a duel of All-Stars with Chicago’s Chris Sale.

“Sometimes we need to catch breaks like that to win games”, Navarro said. If it’s him, if it’s someone else, we’re going to try to find a way to make it happen.

“It didn’t look real good”, manager Don Mattingly said.

But Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich made a flawless throw, and catcher Jeff Mathis held on to the ball as Sanchez bowled him over, preserving a 5-4 Marlins victory.

Both were placed on the 15-day disabled list, but it remains to be seen if Conley will be ready to go in about two weeks when eligible.

It looks like if the Marlins want the Wild Card, they will have to look outside of the organization.

Health has been a big concern for Stanton who is signed through the 2027 season on a 13-year, $325 million contract. “It was a great throw”.

The White Sox overcame another bad outing by James Shields, who allowed 10 hits and seven runs in three-plus innings. During that time, he has pitched to a 4.43 ERA while missing a start serving a five-game suspension for violating team rules, insubordination and destroying team uniforms.

“You get a hit there, you have to make them make a play”, Ventura said. “It’s frustrating. It would be frustrating for anybody”. But that left the plate uncovered, and Robert Andino – who had been at second base – kept running and scored without a throw. “It would be frustrating for anybody”, Sale said to a reporter after Sunday’s game.

“I know I didn’t because I was running”, Navarro said.

Prado’s RBI single in the seventh put Miami ahead to stay. Justin Morneau hit a double to right, scoring Coats to tie the game.

Stanton leads the Marlins with 25 homers and 70 RBIs while batting.244.

“I take pride in what I do and how I handle myself and how I handle my business, ” Sale said. He walked as a pinch-hitter in the eighth Sunday. Koehler’s 0.67 ERA since July 21 was the best among starters in the major leagues.

One stat that has remained consistent for Sale throughout the six-game stretch is other than the game against the Atlanta Braves on July 8, Sale has been below the league average when it comes to the exit velocity of his pitch.
