Giants at Cowboys: Game preview, odds, prediction

The Cowboys owner revealed Tuesday that his team will keep Tony Romo on the 53-man active roster as the quarterback works his way back from a broken back he suffered in the preseason.

The preseason stuff in which Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott produced a passer rating of 137.8, the highest of any rookie who set foot on an National Football League field this summer, to go along with 7.4 yards-per-carry on the ground.

It’s getting so close now, the Dallas Cowboys will kick off their 2016 season this Sunday against the New York Giants.

“No one’s naive”, executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones said.

“The one thing I took from Eli is just his demeanor and how calm he was about everything”, Prescott said. “There is a lot of optimism for Dak”.

When Romo was hurt August 25 against the Seattle Seahawks, the estimated time frame for a return was six to 10 weeks.

It’s one illustration why the Cowboys believe they can survive a few games without Romo after the 36-year-old’s fourth back injury in less than four years – and why they believe they might have found a future beyond their 10-year starter.

Giants linebacker Keenan Robinson is well aware of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott’s dazzling preseason numbers.

“You don’t want to bombard the guy, especially as a rookie”, Sanchez said after his first practice with the Cowboys on Monday.

I don’t know how you circumcise a mosquito, but that sounds like a thankless job. The pressure is not on me. “And so we’ll be real liberal when we start evaluating when it is he’ll come back”. The way this team plays and the outcome of Sunday’s game will have a direct impact on how the Cowboys can put the “ghost” of Tony Romo to bed, at least for the time being.

Here are three keys to the matchup between the Giants and Cowboys, last season’s third- and fourth-place finishers in the NFC East.

The Dallas Cowboys signed Mark Sanchez over the weekend to bring in a veteran arm as Dak Prescott’s back up.

Prescott is a better option than what Matt Cassel, Brandon Weeden and Kellen Moore provided last season. “We faced RG3 when I was in New Orleans”, said Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spanuolo. “Some of the other things we can do that we don’t have to depend on that experience are there and alive in this team”. Rookies Eli Apple and Darian Thompson along with newly acquired Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie are expected to shore up a pass defense that allowed an NFL-worst 299 ypg last season.

The Cowboys went through something similar a year ago, teaching Matt Cassel the offense on the run after he was acquired in Week 3 in a trade with the Buffalo Bills.
