Giants back in the hunt after consecutive wins

Once written off, the Giants are now relevant once more. “I don’t think the backing off thing is in Rex’s nature, ” Whisenhunt said. It’s been hotly debated in the comments here. He has missed a 30-yard field goal and an extra point in the first four games, so Buffalo signed free agent Billy Cundiff on Wednesday. The previous high was 25, by the Giants and Chicago Bears on November 7, 2004. They chose to be Nick Walenda – again – when they didn’t need to be. Nothing wrong with that – you win by trying to win.

“You get exhausted of doing pushups”. The Giants didn’t recognize that Sunday. “We’ll be standing there, right there, ready to toe the line again next week”. No doubt. No argument. “We know he’s going to be a really good quarterback in this league and that’s exciting for us”.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo does not have the same level of talent as his disposal as he had in his first go round as Giants’ defensive coordinator when he had Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka to deploy.

A little advice, though, for those of you still screaming for the heads of Coughlin and McAdoo over this.

The Bills are confident their performance will improve.

The Giants, Cowboys and Washington are all 2-2. Sunday, in a game where they are a heavy favorite against the reeling San Francisco 49ers, is a spot where they absolutely can not afford to stumble. This football team just hasn’t learned how to win yet.

The other area that the Giants have had surprising success at is in the run game. They had been driving hard on the slants. It has been night and day from 2014 to 2015 for the Giants in stopping the run.

“He’s done a good job”, Coughlin said. It’s not unheard of for a player with an injury to sit out a practice session this early in the week, whether the injury is major or minor.

One play into the game, Flowers’ ankle got rolled up on during a Rashad Jennings run. After piling up 111 sacks the previous two seasons, most in the National Football League, the Bills have only seven for 27 yards.

“I’m just playing within myself”, said Mariota. Coughlin will keep on reminding them to reach for continued relevance. That play was the game. “I respect the hell out of it”.

Only one of the Giants opponents’ 89 rushing attempts has gained at least 20 yards. The Giants have five sacks in four games, and only the Miami Dolphins (one measly sack) have fewer. As evidence, here’s a photo sent to us by a tipster at Sunday’s Giants-Bills game. His passer rating of 109.2 is the fifth best in the NFL.

NOTES: Coughlin had no update on LB Devon Kennard’s injured hamstring. They will hold out hope that Jason Pierre-Paul can help them in the final few games. He has also caught 22 passes for 230 yards. Against top-flight quarterbacks, though, the lack of pressure is a killer. So we had more yards there. “I don’t think we’re going to shy away from our expectations”. “We’ve been talking about it all week. Especially the self-inflicted ones”. It’s more about doing things that allow linebackers to be a greater part of the play-making than before.

“I think we’re just developing an overall relationship, as friends, and as co-workers”, Beason said. “It’s always a joy to see how much he loves to do what he does, and how much of a competitor he is”. And if the Bills haven’t learned yet that talk is cheap, I’m not sure they will. He’s going to preach the same thing no matter what. We knew it and Eli knew it as well. When he’s consistent, we’re reminded of the fact that we can trust in him and the direction that we’re going. Let’s build on that and don’t forget about those things.

Nothing went right for Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills, who methodically unraveled during a 24-10 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. There are also probably coaches who manage in-game situations more sensibly. Since joining the Giants, Coughlin is 15-10 against first-year head coaches.
