Giants grounded in McAdoo’s debut, hang on to beat Cowboys

“This is a big win for the team and for the guys who were here a year ago”, Manning said.

Sep 11, 2016; Arlington, TX, USA; New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz (80) reacts after catching a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.

Though Dallas’ largest points deficit was a whopping four, Prescott was tasked with attempting 45 passes despite playing at home, the presence of the dynamic Elliott and the aforementioned offensive line that has been so good at run-blocking for years. But New York’s veteran quarterback Eli Manning showed better, throwing for three touchdowns to lift the New York Giants a 20-19 victory.

“That was a big play”, McAdoo said of Cruz’s touchdown. “We’re focused on everything that’s out in front of us”. “We’ve learned from the past and moved on”. But last year’s Defensive Player of the Year wasn’t as effective as he normally is, and seemed to have a tough time dealing with three-time Pro Bowl left guard Josh Sitton.

“I didn’t care who scored the touchdown”, center Weston Richburg said. And he acknowledged it after the game. Except that in the first half, the Cowboys converted three long drives into mere field goals instead of touchdowns.

Even so, the Giants limited Dallas’ outside receivers Terrance Williams and Dez Bryant to just four total catches for 42 yards. This time, they drove down the field in the fourth quarter and their defense held. That positive gain could have given Dan Bailey a chance to kick a game-winning field goal, but Williams has to do that right thing before the play ends.

“In my mind, I was just trying to get a first down and then dive out of bounds, but it just didn’t go as planned”, Williams said. “To be able to get this moment again is one of the biggest things for me and one of the biggest obstacles for me to cross”. Cruz played his first game since October 2014, and ended up scoring the game-winning touchdown on a 3-yard pass by Eli Manning.

This loss was a heartbreaking for the Cowboys because they dominated the game today. NY came out in the third quarter and looked out of sorts. The game ended with the ball on the NY 40 but no time left for Bailey to swing his leg. Victor Cruz utilized a pick play that got Cowboys corner Brandon Carr caught up in the wash, and found himself wide open in the endzone as a result. The 15th anniversary of September 11 resonates with Cruz, the son of a 30-year New Jersey fireman who was among the first responders at Ground Zero. Cruz’s first touchdown (and salsa dance) since returning from injury gave the Giants the late lead. The rookie made a tremendous leaping catch in the end zone on a 9-yard fade pass from Manning, leaping over one defender and holding on as he was hit by another. It’s a long season, but it may be hard for Dallas to get the taste of this one out of their collective mouths. “I’m thinking go win the game”.
