Giants mail it in, blown out by Vikings, 49-17
Washington’s NFC East-clinching victory over the Eagles insured that Tom Coughlin’s Giants will miss the playoffs for a fourth straight year. Two plays later, Adrian Peterson was in the end zone for his tenth touchdown of the season, and Blair Walsh’s extra point extended the Minnesota lead to 29-3. He’s gone over 100 yards on six occasions but hasn’t since the calendar flipped to December.

Thomas, who exited the game for the second time upon being ejected, suffered a sprained ankle earlier in the evening and was initially listed as questionable to return. He ran for a fifth, bringing his total 16 on the season and rebounded well from the week before where he and the Vikings turned the ball over three times. The Giants have rushed for 253 yards in the last two weeks. Beckham, given the week off after his jawing/taunting/targeting of Josh Norman and the Carolina Panthers last week, was the most valuable player in this game simply by demonstrating that the Giants are an ineffective, muddled mess without him in the lineup. The Vikings could not only get to the playoffs, but potentially win the division, if they grab a win here and defeat Green Bay in their final game. Things went to bad to worse for the Giants when Manning threw his third interception of the game, setting up the Vikings near the goal line. Manning has already set a career high with 32 touchdown passes, besting the 31 he threw in 2010.
Without Odell Beckham Jr. the Giants (6-8) will be tasked with defeating the Vikings (9-5) if they are to have any chance of keeping their playoffs alive.
Without Beckham, the Giants’ wide receivers in the first half combined for three catches (one apiece for Randle, Nicks and White) and two glaring drops (Randle, Dwayne Harris), and managed to play two Manning passes into interceptions. Minnesota’s No. 7 pass defense (229.5 yards per game) now goes up against a short-handed Giants air attack with Reuben Randle as the pseudo-No. Adrian Peterson led in rushing with 63 yards in 18 carries. The game is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on NBC.
Prediction: Minnesota has proven itself to be a formidable team led by the development of Bridgewater and comeback of Peterson.
