Giants Matt Moore Loses No-Hitter in the Ninth Inning
Moore retired 14 batters in a row before walking Seager with one out in the seventh.

Moore said he recorded a few outs with it Thursday night, including Adrian Gonzalez grounding out on a pitch he hit toward the end of his bat – the result of the cutter’s movement away from left-handed hitters. “It was a fun ride all the way up until that point. there’s not a lot to be angry about”. The speedy outfielder came running to his right tracking a low fly ball that appeared to hover in the air, giving Span just enough time to make the catch. Chase Utley’s 10-pitch strikeout only inflamed the problem, and when Moore returned to the dugout, Bochy was waiting.
Moore wound up allowing a hit and three walks in 8 2/3 innings on a career-high 133 pitches (88 strikes).
Moore held the Dodgers hitless until shortstop Corey Seager blooped a single to right to end the bid with two outs in the ninth.
Moore said he tinkered with a cutter while coming back from Tommy John surgery a year ago but decided that was a bad time to introduce a new pitch.
“He was excited to have a chance at it”. He was very grateful and said, ‘Thanks, I appreciate you giving me a chance, ‘ ” Bochy said. “He pitched his heart out”. “It doesn’t feel like we lost the series, to be honest, because of the way we won tonight”.
Bochy said he was concerned about Moore’s pitch count, but Moore had told him he felt great.
“This game is probably as big a game as any game we’ve had all year”, Bochy said. The worst team in the Majors in the second half was in danger of getting swept by a bitter rival and falling four games out of first.
Instead, the Giants moved within two games of the Dodgers in the NL West.
It was the second time Stripling started against the Giants, a team he no-hit for 7 1/3 innings in his major league debut on April 8 in San Francisco. And he nearly became the first Giants pitcher to no-hit the Dodgers since 1915, when New York’s Rube Marquard stopped Brooklyn.
Moore had an easy go of things through six innings, needing just 73 pitches.
Moore retired 14 straight batters at one stretch and is now 1-3 in five starts for the Giants. He was traded over from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for a package headlined by third baseman, Matt Duffy.
The Dodgers won two of three games and didn’t allow the no-hitter, something positive they can take from the game. “We were not ready for that”.
Joe Panik then hammered a changeup into the right field pavilion to widen San Francisco’s advantage to 3-0. Span noticed the change from center field, calling the pitch “the equalizer”.
The Dodgers remain tied with the Giants for the most consecutive years with a no-hitter – all by Sandy Koufax – from 1962-65.
The Dodgers have now lost six of their 13 games to the Giants in their head-to-head matchups this season.
The Dodgers threw them from 1962-65, all by Sandy Koufax.
NOTES: Dodgers OF Andre Ethier (broken leg) went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs in a rehab appearance for Class A Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday night. Bud Norris starts the opener on Friday night for the Dodgers, a 7:10 p.m. PT start. Samardzija is 2-2 with a 2.92 ERA in five starts lifetime against Atlanta. Nothing would keep him from a 4-0 win over the Dodgers.

MILWAUKEE – Andrew McCutchen hit a home run and a pair of RBI singles, including the tiebreaker in the 10th inning, and Pittsburgh beat Milwaukee to stop a nine-game skid at Miller Park. The Dodgers stayed behind for four against the Chicago Cubs, which is no way to spend a long weekend.
