Giants name Ben McAdoo to replace Coughlin

If it’s true that the Eagles aren’t going to interview any other candidates, then it looks as though Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson, Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo or former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin will be their man.

They are: special teams coordinator Dave Fipp, running backs coach Duce Staley, both of whom were the first two interviewed for the head coaching job, offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, and defensive backs coach Cory Undlin.

McAdoo has earned praise for his work with quarterback Eli Manning, who has thrown 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions and completed 62.8 percent of his passes the past two seasons. One day, the Eagles are anxious to hire McAdoo, a 38-year old who has been a coordinator for only two years. I think that’s a possibility. You associate the New York Giants with Tom Coughlin, and Tom Coughlin with the New York Giants. They meant to interview Cincinnati offensive coordinator Hue Jackson on Thursday, but he accepted the Browns job hours before the Giants decided on McAdoo.

Coughlin, during his tour as wide receivers coach of the Eagles helped develop Mike Quick, one of the team’s all-time great receivers.

The Giants will introduce McAdoo as their new head coach at a Friday news conference.

With McAdoo off the table, the Philadelphia Eagles have turned their attention completely to Tom Coughlin for their HC vacancy.

The San Francisco 49ers also had their eye on Coughlin. He began last season knowing he had to turn things around to keep his job, and the Giants lost six games either in the final 1:14 of regulation or in overtime. Despite two 6-10 seasons that led to the departure of Coughlin, McAdoo’s offense finished 2014 ranked 10th and were ranked eighth in 2015.

Ben McAdoo really played his cards right.

There’s also the possibility that the thought of working with de facto GM Howie Roseman scared Coughlin off. It’s been reported in the past and earlier this offseason that the notion of being under Roseman has anxious several Philly head coaching candidates.

McAdoo served as the Green Bay Packers’ tight ends coach from 2006-11 and quarterbacks coach from 2012-13, but he saw the writing on the wall. “I figured him or Spags would have been a great pick”.

Previously, he spent eight years as assistant coach with the Green Bay Packers, according to his biography on the Giants website.
