Giants OF Pence likely out 8 weeks with hamstring surgery

San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence likely will have surgery to fix a torn right hamstring tendon and will miss eight weeks.

Diagnosed with a strained right hamstring suffered during a game against the Braves in Atlanta, Pence now has a longer timetable based on a gruesome-sounding detail stemming from the damage.

Bochy acknowledged he and GM Bobby Evans have discussed external options. He was once an iron man, playing all 162 games in 2013 and 2014, but injuries limited him to only 52 games in 2015.

Obviously, there’s no good time to lose a valuable member of the roster.

This represents about the worst-case scenario for Pence, who reaggravated a previously moderate injury and now will be spending his summer rehabbing a much more serious malady. The Giants hope to get him back in August.

Pence was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday.

Jarrett Parker will start in Pence’s place Friday night in St. Louis. Brandon Belt could play outfield more often, too.

“We’ve got to get creative here”, Bochy said, via ESPN.

“I like the phrase, ‘Be a fountain, ‘ and lift these guys up and at the same time do the work to get back”, he said. “If you look at our lineup as a group, we can get a little better”.

One has to wonder if the Giants will look outside the organization as well for some reinforcements.

The Giants are now in the process of determining when and where Pence might have a procedure, which would get him back on the field quicker than a rehab program. Though Braun hasn’t been a picture of health either.
