Giants promote assistant McAdoo to head coach
In replacing the 69-year-old Coughlin, the NFL’s oldest coach at the time of his resignation last week, McAdoo, 38, becomes the NFL’s second-youngest coach behind only the Dolphins’ recently hired Adam Gase, 37. He will formally be introduced at a news conference on Friday morning.

Citing “respect, humility and dedication” as his core values, McAdoo offered a preview of what to expect from him as head coach.
“We were all impressed with his energy, his enthusiasm, his vision and his desire”, Giants president and co-owner John Mara said. Ben has been preparing for this opportunity since he started coaching, and he has earned his stripes every step of the way.
The Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans are now the only teams without coaches and with former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin officially pulling out of the Eagles coach hunt for some reason, all three seem to be twisting in the wind. The Giants will have money to spend in free agency and a general manager on the firing line to prove he hasn’t lost it. They will need a strong draft and also will need key additions on both sides of the ball.
Coughlin stepped down January 4 after 12 seasons, two of which produced Super Bowl wins.
Manning certainly voiced his opinion that he wanted McAdoo to stay in the days after Tom Coughlin resigned. He had 18 touchdowns and 27 interceptions in 2013.
However, McAdoo would not have gotten the job unless the Giants felt he was the right man, Mara said.
“I enjoy the pressure, I thrive under it, I get excited for it, and I think the type of pressure that’s involved here is right up my alley”.
McAdoo has a very good rapport with Manning, but it remains to be seen how he will do handling all of the responsibilities of a head coach.
“I accept my share of the blame for what has gone on”, Mara told reporters on Friday. “He drove all night just for the opportunity to sit and talk football”.
“McAdoo wasn”t the only Giants coach being wooed by the Eagles. has helped revive the offense. Tom Coughlin also interviewed for the job before withdrawing from consideration. It was McCarthy who plucked McAdoo from college coaching and gave him an National Football League job when McCarthy was the New Orleans Saints’ offensive coordinator in 2004.
McAdoo learned under Coughlin and has shown some of his mentor’s attitudes. He is not afraid to gamble. The Giants rank fourth in touchdown passes and ninth in points per game since 2014.
“Coach Coughlin gets paid to make decisions”, Reese said then. Only Steve Owen won more games as the Giants coach.
“He has a tremendous grasp of the offense, he’s great standing up in that offensive meeting room in front of the entire offense and putting the game plan in”.

“I have been very fortunate to have a lot of great coaches, administrators and players take an interest in me and my career”, McAdoo said. Not only did they try to save face by forcing him to resign – as if it was his decision – but they did so after signing him to a lame duck, one-year contract extension that had him coaching the team in 2016. “I’m sure his players and the fans are all excited”.
