Giants put Peavy on DL, call up Suarez to start vs Braves

The Giants came home to AT&T Park Friday night and looked like a real contender, punishing the lowly Atlanta Braves 7-0 behind Jeff Samardzija to forge just their third two-game winning streak since the second half started and did so with a second straight shutout.

“I’m a pitcher that needs to be down in the zone and create movement”, Blair said. I’m just really grateful and appreciative to be a part of it.

His only mistake came when Crawford socked an 0-1 fastball for his 12th homer.

“You get pitched differently”, Panik said he’s noticed since being dropped from second to as low as eighth in the order this season. “We’re just trying to bring every bit of focus and concentration into each day’s game, and we’ll do all we can to keep it going (Saturday)”. Belt’s average is down from.302 prior to the All-Star break to a current.276, with the first baseman’s batting slump seeming to correlate with San Francisco’s second half collapse. Freeman is now hitting.290/.386/.548 and has already far surpassed his career-best with 27 home runs. Atlanta owns the worst record in the majors while the Giants are just two games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West despite losing eight of their last 11 games. There are a couple possibilities here: Parker could be around in case the Giants need to make a move with Pence, or they could decide to option Suarez following his spot-start and activate Parker for an extra outfielder.

The Giants have placed right-hander Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

Braves: RHP Julio Teheran (3-9) pitches against San Diego on Tuesday in the opener of a brief, three-game homestand. It got away from him.

The homers gave the Braves 65 in their last 66 games.

“The first one, I hit that well”, said Panik, who also homered off Blair in Atlanta.

The last-place Braves had lost 12 of 16 going into Saturday.

The 13-run total was the Giants’ most since a 15-4 win at Pittsburgh on June 21. Jim Johnson closed the door for his 13th save. The Giants were unable to pad their 1-0 lead.

“That’s a big a strong man”, Braves interim manager Brian Snitker said of Kemp. They made it a three-triple inning when Kemp s diving attempt came up short on Conor Gillaspie s drive into the left field corner. Peavy’s move to the DL is retroactive to August 21.

Peavy underwent an MRI on Saturday, the results of which weren’t immediately known, Bochy said. OF Hunter Pence missed his third consecutive game with tightness in his right hamstring.

The Giants are off Monday and will next need a fifth starter September 2 against the Cubs in Chicago.

Belt’s second hit, a double, in the fifth off Braves reliever John Gant plated Posey to make it 7-0. But they all came in succession leading off the fourth, and produced the only runs Foltynewicz would need. The 24-year-old, who limited the Giants to one run on three hits over six innings in a 5-3 Braves win earlier this season, almost duplicated the feat in the rematch. He gave up a solo home run to Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford, his 12th, leading off the second inning, but limited the Giants to just four other hits before leaving with two on and two out in the eighth.A two-out double by Denard Span and walk by Angel Pagan put the potential tying runs on base in the eighth and brought the hard-throwing Cabrera out of the bullpen. He got Joe Panik to ground softly to first baseman Freddie Freeman to kill the threat.Foltynewicz (7-5) walked one and struck out six in his 7 2/3 innings.
